The year begins on a strong note for the global esports ecosystem. The Esports World Cup Foundation has officially unveiled the competition format and qualification model for the inaugural edition of the Esports Nations Cup, scheduled to take place in November 2026 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This announcement represents a major strategic milestone for the Foundation, which aims to play a long-term role in structuring and expanding esports on a global scale. Designed to be innovative, inclusive, and firmly centered on national representation, the Esports Nations Cup introduces a new chapter in international esports competition.

<img fetchpriority="high" width="1024" height="683" alt="" class="wp-image-688 lws-optimize-lazyload"/ data-src="https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782933911-2-1024x683.jpeg" srcset="https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782933911-2-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782933911-2-300x200.jpeg 300w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782933911-2-768x512.jpeg 768w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782933911-2-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782933911-2.jpeg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

An Ambitious and Inclusive Format

The Esports Nations Cup will feature 16 game titles, contested over a four-week period. Competitions will alternate between team-based and individual formats, developed in close collaboration with game publishers and official partners.

Unlike traditional club-based tournaments, participating teams will consist of national selections, bringing together the best eligible players from each country rather than full club rosters. Depending on the discipline, 24 to 48 national teams will compete in team events, while individual competitions will include 32 to 128 players per title.

The qualification system will combine direct invitations, based on seasonal performance, with open online regional qualifiers, ensuring broad and fair access to the tournament. Another key innovation is the guarantee of a minimum number of matches for qualified participants, designed to foster compelling national storylines and deepen fan engagement.

<img width="1024" height="576" alt="" class="wp-image-689 lws-optimize-lazyload"/ data-src="https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782932028-1-2-1024x576.jpeg" srcset="https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782932028-1-2-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782932028-1-2-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782932028-1-2-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782932028-1-2-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782932028-1-2-1280x720.jpeg 1280w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/1767782932028-1-2.jpeg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

Promoting Diversity and Global Representation

The competition format has been specifically designed to accommodate a wide range of participants, with the core objective of ensuring genuine geographic diversity and global representation. For teams and players reaching the final stages, the guarantee of multiple matches is essential. It enables the development of rivalries, strengthens national identity, and delivers a more emotionally engaging experience for fans—rooted in national pride and collective support.

A Complementary Role Within the Club Ecosystem

The Esports World Cup Foundation has been keen to reassure established stakeholders within the industry: the Esports Nations Cup is not intended to replace the club-based ecosystem. Clubs remain the backbone of competitive esports, playing a critical role in talent development and long-term career progression.

Instead, the new competition adopts a complementary approach, bringing top players together in national teams on a periodic basis while preserving the integrity of club competitions. Close collaboration with game publishers will ensure seamless integration into existing ecosystems, reinforcing the tournament’s credibility from its very first edition.

A Long-Term Vision for Global Esports

The Esports Nations Cup will be held biennially, with the inaugural event confirmed for Riyadh in 2026. Looking ahead, organizers are considering a rotation of host cities and increased support for national esports development programs worldwide.

For those behind the project, the ambition is clear: to offer players the unique opportunity to represent their country on the global stage, while strengthening the emotional bond between esports and its communities. A vision that could ultimately reshape the role of international competitions in the future of global esports.

It is now official: the first electric vehicle developed by Sony Honda Mobility will feature a gamer-focused function—native PlayStation Remote Play support, enabling PS4 and PS5 game streaming directly inside the car.

More than three years after Sony and Honda announced the creation of their joint venture, capitalized at 10 billion yen and aimed at launching a new shared brand called AFEELA, Sony has confirmed one of the most anticipated features of its upcoming vehicle, scheduled for release next year.

PlayStation Remote Play Comes to the Cabin

In an official statement, Sony Honda Mobility revealed that it will become the first automaker to natively integrate PlayStation Remote Play into a production vehicle. Similar in concept to the PlayStation Portal, this feature will allow users to stream their PS4 and PS5 games directly within the AFEELA 1.

<img width="1024" height="576" alt="" class="wp-image-668 lws-optimize-lazyload"/ data-src="https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/image-5.png" srcset="https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/image-5.png 1024w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/image-5-300x169.png 300w, https://magazineafriqueit.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/image-5-768x432.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

Unlike cloud gaming services, this is not server-based game streaming. Instead, the vehicle connects remotely to the user’s PlayStation console at home, displaying and running games installed locally on that PS4 or PS5. Performance will therefore depend heavily on network quality and connection stability.

A New Vision of In-Car Entertainment

“With the introduction of PS Remote Play, AFEELA brings its vision of mobility to life by transforming travel time into an immersive and emotional experience,” said Izumi Kawanishi, President and COO of Sony Honda Mobility. “This integration marks a new milestone, elevating passenger entertainment to an unprecedented level.”

That said, some observers may regret the absence of a fully embedded PS5 architecture within the vehicle itself. Such an approach would have enabled local gameplay, free from network constraints, and delivered a more consistent gaming experience. Given that the first AFEELA model is expected to be priced around $90,000, the lack of an onboard console may raise eyebrows.

Still Some Questions Ahead of 2026 Launch

AFEELA emphasizes that its integrated features are designed both for stationary moments such as charging stops and for keeping passengers entertained during long journeys. However, the company has yet to confirm whether a DualSense controller will be included with the vehicle.

The first deliveries of the AFEELA 1 are expected in 2026, positioning the car at the crossroads of electric mobility, digital entertainment, and next-generation in-car experiences. A bold move clearly aimed at drivers who see their vehicle as more than just a means of transport.

Present on Friday, December 19, 2025, at the Grand Stade of Kpalimé for the official launch of the 2025–2026 season of the School and University Championships (CSU), the President of the Togolese E-sports Federation, Steven Dadji, expressed his satisfaction with the integration of e-sports as a demonstration discipline in the 2025–2026 CSU season.

“It is a pleasure for us, but also a recognition of the efforts undertaken. We are very happy to see our discipline integrated into the school and university championships as a demonstration sport.”

According to the head of Togolese e-sports, this first appearance in a national school competition represents a strategic opportunity to promote the discipline.

“The objective is first and foremost to promote e-sports, which is the competitive practice of video games. At the end of this championship, we hope that young people will truly embrace the discipline. There will be training, and we aim to identify new talents, equip them, and prepare them to compete with countries that are already more advanced than Togo.”

Beyond gaming, Steven Dadji highlighted the economic and educational potential of the discipline.

“To the youth, we say that video games are a real opportunity. E-sports represent opportunities for job creation and training.”

E-sports is thus taking another step toward recognition as a fully-fledged sporting discipline in Togo, one year after the establishment of its national federation.
